Stop the fight before it starts.

There is a three-minute window at the start of every hard conversation where it is still going one way or the other. This guide is about what to do inside that window.

  • The one shift that turns discussing into fighting, and how to catch it in the first minute
  • Exact words to use mid-conversation, not a debrief for afterwards
  • Why it works even if your partner never reads a word of it

Here are the three minutes.

The guide goes deeper, with the scripts and the what-ifs. But the method isn't a secret worth withholding to make you sign up — so here it is.

01
Minute one

Notice the switch

Every argument has a point where it stops being about the dishes and becomes about whether you're respected, or wanted, or on the same team. It is almost always physical first. That sensation is the alarm, and it arrives before the words do.

02
Minute two

Name it out loud

You describe the conversation rather than continuing it. No accusation, no diagnosis of your partner. One plain sentence about the two of you — because a second ago you were opponents, and now you are two people looking at the same argument.

03
Minute three

Ask for the smaller thing

Don't try to settle the whole thing while exhausted. Ask for something small enough that agreeing costs nothing: a pause, one round each without interruption, or picking it up tomorrow at a named time. A pause only works if you say when you're coming back.
